Martin was instantly sympathetic, diagnosed my hernia (previously mis-diagnosed by the NHS) and offered me an op at a very early date. On the day he, and all the team, displayed a fine blend of care and efficiency. He followed up by telephone two days later to make sure all was well. It was! Thankyou.

I had been diagnosed with an inguinal hernia at the age of 47 by my local hospital, who then booked me in for surgery. I was advised I wouldn’t know who my surgeon was until the day, so I felt my questions weren’t answered and wouldn't be until the surgery day. This would be my first operation and I was already petrified, so when I learned that I would not be able to get any of the information I needed to enable me to be comfortable with proceeding, I cancelled the operation. After much research (2 years)! and scaring myself with horror stories on the internet I eventually read about Mr. Martin Kurzer, and so I booked a consultation. From my first meeting to my post-op review, I had a fantastic experience that I cannot fault in any way. During my consultation he easily diagnosed a femoral hernia (not inguinal as previously misdiagnosed by my local hospital) and explained it's repaired slightly differently with a mesh plug. I was offered a choice of anaesthetic and an explanation of the procedure. I left feeling I was in great hands, and excited and relieved at the thought of not having to wear a hernia belt in the future. I had a pre-op questionnaire, pre-op test and a phone call a week before to advise me on what would happen on the day which relieved my anxiety and enabled me to feel fully prepared. I arrived at the hospital in the early morning of my surgery day and within an hour I was on my way to theatre. All the staff were reassuring and put me at ease. I had no pain after surgery and was discharged after lunch! My husband accompanied me home. I wasn’t in any pain but took the paracetamol as advised. I was immediately able to walk upstairs. I just felt a little cautious when lowering to sit or stand, but I had no pain, no bruising and a very neat flat scar. I have a physical job and returned to work after 4 weeks with no pain and no restrictions. If I worked in an office I could have easily returned after one or two weeks. My only regret is that I didn’t have it done sooner. I am so grateful to Mr. Kurzer for not only correctly diagnosing my hernia, but because I believe the successful surgery and my fast recovery were down to his great care, knowledge and expertise. I highly recommend Mr. Martin Kurzer and the team at St John and St Elizabeth without hesitation, and want to thank them again for the excellent experience.

I had an inguinal hernia make an appearance about 7 months ago. I visited my local GP who referred me to the IHG hernia center in my local town. I met Mr Kurzer there who instantly diagnosed the type of hernia I had, and his reccomendations on how to operate on it. He did the paperwork and processed my needs to the NHS which was accepted for funding. A date was given for my operation, but this week I had a phone call with a cancellation slot offered to me the following day. I duly took this and could not have been in better hands, he and his whole team were great during pre op and during the opertion itself. It was almost like a nice day out! During the operation both Martin and his staff kept me informed on what he was doing (I had a local anaesthetic) and the banter in the theatre was uplifting. The post op care discussion with one of the nurses was in depth and explained to me all of what I needed to do regarding rest, excercise and tablets to take.

I had been suffering with a primary left sided inguinal hernia for more than 6 months which was causing increasing discomfort to the stage where I was unable to stand without any pain for more than 5/10 minutes and was having to adjust my daily routine around it to avoid further pain. An NHS referral which was taking far too long led me down the private route (self-funded) which although an expense I could have done without, my deteriorating quality of life due to the hernia made a speedy resolution to the condition an absolute necessity. Extensive internet research led me to Mr Kurzer and a consultation appointment was made at The Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth in London. At the consultation appointment, following an examination, Mr Kurzer confirmed my inguinal hernia diagnosis and we agreed next steps in the form of an operation to repair the hernia (an open tension-free mesh repair). I was delighted to discover that contrary to NHS wait times, the operation could be completed in a couple of weeks’ time. On the day of the operation I have to admit that I was rather anxious but my fears were immediately allayed by the excellent nursing staff at the hospital, my anaesthetist (Dr Brown) and Mr Kurzer who were all absolutely fantastic. I am now 4 days post op and whilst still a little tender and sore, I am delighted that I took the decision in getting the hernia resolved. Mr Kurzer is clearly a very experienced and knowledgeable surgeon and I have no doubts that I made the right choice. He has since been in contact several times to check on my recovery and his manner throughout has been professional, reassuring and thoughtful- he is a genuinely nice man and I would not hesitate in recommending him.
