Reviews
I have now had hernia repairs on both sides, one side using a natural tissue suture method and the other side by open mesh surgery.
I have consulted most of the leading hernia surgeons both in the UK and Europe, including Mr Kurzer. Each of them have their own variations and preferences in terms of technique depending on patient characteristics. In my view, Mr Kurzer is very honest, extremely caring and a very skilled surgeon, highly regarded by some of the leading experts in the UK and overseas which serves to underline his considerable expertise in this area. For anyone seeking a hernia mesh repair under local anaesthetic I would recommend Mr Kurzer without any hesitation.
Was seen very quickly - clear explanation and operate on within 2 weeks. Preop assessment an daycare care excellent
On the 3rd September 2024, Martin performed an open mesh repair of my paraumbilical hernia under local anaesthetic. I had no qualms about it beforehand because Martin had carried out a similar repair of my inguinal hernia several years before. After the first few days following surgery I had to this day experienced no further pain or problem of any kind. This time round it was much the same, only after a day or two I contacted Martin to say that I had noticed some redness near the operation site which he was happy to examine via a WhatsApp video call - it turned out to be merely bruising, which cleared up after few days.
As I live outside of London and I had to report to the Hospital at 7.00 am, I needed somewhere to stay the night before. Martin offered to help as he knew the St John's area very well. He booked me into St Johns Boutique Hotel which was five minutes walk from the Hospital, but on arrival it became clear that there had been some confusion and my booking had been cancelled. Martin seemed more than happy to be phoned out of hours to assist in sorting things out.
There was a further issue at the booking in desk because for some reason I wasn't on their list. I had to sit in the waiting for an hour until Martin arrived. He lost no time in sorting things out with the receptionist as he didn't want me getting stressed before my surgery.
My second hernia repair is now just a distant memory and the scars from both operations are now almost invisible.
I can thoroughly recommend Martin to anyone with a hernia - the care he provides is truly second to none.
I came to Martin after having had an unsuccessful operation with a different consultant at another hosptial. Martin gave me relevant advice on how to manage my condition at that time, and then, when the time was right, he carried out a successful operation on me.
Martin is a very honest. He listens carefully to what patients tell him and he responds in a very caring and professional way. He is very generous with his time - making himself available for communication. The impression I have of him is that he is someone who, first and foremost, wants to help other people. This is what has driven him to be such an expert in his field.
I came to this review ready to cite the many positive reasons for recommending Martin to anyone seeking the very best prospect for a kind, attentive and informative consultation process and successful outcome of surgery for an inguinal hernia. Yet so much has already been said by others in these reviews, which I happily endorse and won't repeat.
Instead, I would add that I researched the procedure and options thoroughly through the literature and spoke to particular surgeons. One expert I consulted advised on the advantages of finding a specialist hernia surgeon who had completed a high volume of open inguinal hernia repairs. My other research suggested I seek a surgeon expert in repair using local rather than general anaesthetic, to reduce risk of complications. Martin met these criteria exactly and I confidently went ahead with surgery in December 2024, with a successful outcome.
Martin's accessibility and his post-op notes for patients, which advise on the recovery pathway and normal variations that can occur, have been invaluable and reflect his understanding that while for him the surgery and patient recovery process might be familiar, they are more rarely so for the patient. He is an exceptional and very empathic doctor.
