I agree absolutely with the previous author. I was in a very dark place when I first met Dr. Flais. She brought me back to the surface. It felt to me that the doctors didn't care what I was going through (although some nurses had been more helpful). In fact, my surgeon (by contrast with Dr. Flais) made things far more emotionally worse than they needed to be. I understand the job can be incredibly hard. As a doctor, you are meeting so many different types of individual. And their emotional needs are intense. You have to deal with dying, traumatised and deeply scared patients; this must take a toll. I do understand that. Please note, for future sufferers. Take heart: I have ( later) met other amazing individuals in the NHS who like Dr Sylvie, treated me with respect as an individual human being. Somehow, though, she is remarkable. She is very creative about it. Most importantly for me at the time, she talked me through some strategies about to deal with chronic pain (a phenomenon which I had never encountered before). I felt that was crucial to my recovery and mental strength, and after speaking to her I found a way forward. She has also created a team around her who are inspirational. I have to give a special shout-out to Rosalie, who made me feel like part of a team. What a warm, giving and indeed beautiful person Dr Flais is.

As a patient, I felt more care and genuine support from Dr, Flais than I have from any other doctor during my diagnosis of cancer. She seems to me to be incredibly skilled: she didn't hurt me, whereas others definitely did. She understands the effect that pain will have on your eventual outcome, and doesn't make you feel you ought to suffer, which English doctors do. 'Oh, a paracetamol will do' (when you've been cut open, of course a paracetamol isn't enough - what are they talking about?) . She explains things clearly and carefully, tells you what's about to happen, and she's honest: she doesn't try to pretend things won't hurt. Above all, she treats you like an individual, and tries to help you through the inevitable trauma you are going through. This is genuine care. She has such strength and humour. I can't say enough to describe what a beautiful person she is. Her nurses are also wonderful.

Response from Dr Sylvie Flais

Thank you so much to take the time to share your experience. Knowing I may have helped someone even in the slightest is the best reward I can have. I wish you all the luck in your journey
