My son has the conditon 'Selective Mutism' , I identified his conditon from the age of 3 and it took a further year to get it confirmed professionally. We searched endlessly for people that could help us to understand and treat this and after a 3 year search we were lucky enough to be sent to Dr Stephen Westgarth at Sunderland Hospital. He was the first person we had come across who fully understood what we were going through and how to help. I just wish that every parent of a child with SM would be as fortunate as we were to get the assistance we had. What a wonderful, kind and understanding man he is. I have recommended him to all parents of children with SM.

I would wholeheartedly recommend Dr Stephen Westgarth without hesitation. My 6 year old daughter was diagnosed with selective mutism which requires a very delicate approach, and I am happy to say that after 18 months in Stephens care she has now been discharged and is talking freely in all situations. During our first consultation my daughter spoke in front of Stephen, although not to him, this was a feat in itself at the time, and speaks volumes about the man beyond his role as a doctor. From that point on I was sure that we were in very good hands. Stephens manner was calm, approachable, structured and determined. He was absolutely meticulous in his approach to treating my daughter, we will never be able to thank him enough.

Where do we start? Stephen was a god send to our daughter who was literally wasting away in front of eyes! He within a few months spoke to and advised our daughter on her OCD behaviour and fear of being sick. She is now fit and healthy and acting like a normal teenager, travels and doing so well at school. Her illness just not effected her but us a whole family. We were all on rock bottom and desperate for help. We are now just relishing the fact to being a normal family! It was a very long 2-3 years. Dont hesitate. Go see him . Thankyou Stephen.

Since seeing Dr Westgarth, our child has made significant improvement. Dr Westgarth has demonstrated a great deal of empathy and has provided encouragement to our family. His communication is calm and relaxed, he listens effectively to the patient and to the parents, and he is always open to discussion and suggestion. He soon established a trusting relationship with our child. Goals are set together with him, and the treatment plan is specifically set and adapted for our child. When we visit Dr Westgarth, we feel as he is treating our child, not just another case of OCD.
