Dr Stephen Sawcer

Having a telephone appointment was an excellent idea and worked very well. Prof Sawcer was most informative in discussing what had happened to me and I thank him for the reassurance he gave.

Professor Sawcer did not properly listen to my symptoms and clearly decided upon the diagnosis early on in the consultation. He stated "I am sure you have [diagnosis]". I told him I do not believe this to be the case. After this, he had no more time to spend with me. I think that diagnostic uncertainty requires a certain degree of humility which unfortunately Professor Sawcer could not demonstrate. My GP recognised Professor Sawcer's diagnosis as incorrect immediately. I was soon given the correct diagnosis and treatment by a sub-specialty neurologist in London.

Professor Stephen Sawcer helped save my life in 2022. Through collaborative and incisive intervention using advanced therapy I am certain that his actions have also prevented the paralysis that I presented with being more damaging than it would have been. He kept my doctor wife fully informed during my stay intubated as I was his NHS patient on intensive care and did so by his own personal mobile phone. I returned to work as a surgeon two months later and on the whole have remained very well. As I recovered under his care at Cambridge University Hospital in 2022, I witnessed first hand, as a patient, his outstanding clinical management of my condition. By that I mean I appreciated his clinical examination skills and diagnostic acumen. I would also like to state how impressed I was by how he devoted equal time to all the patients on the ward and did so selflessly. I have been a consultant in Medicine and Surgery for over 22 years. There are few clinicians I have ever known whom I could compare to Prof Sawcer.

The care I received from Dr Sawcer was outstanding. He was incredibly thorough with his tests, put me at ease and gave me methods to help with my headaches which have worked really well for me.

It was a pleasure to have dealt with Dr Sawcer. I felt confident that he listened carefully to my description of my condition. He gave his feedback/opinions in a constructive and sympathetic way. His easy and confident manner, along with a dash of humour, made for a very comforting experience and I came away feeling a lot better about my condition than before I went in. Thank you.

I saw Professor Sawcer. He was excelllent. I spent about 1 hour with him, he explained everything with regards to my symptoms clearly. He also sent me a letter going through all the details of my visit to see him. He made me very much at ease.

Consultation was thorough and unhurried. I was put at ease from the beginning. Explanations were clear and concise.

Dr Sawcer was very thorough in his investigation and put me at my ease as soon as we met him . He sensitively pointed out that he needed to hear from me ( rather than my partner ) the descriptions of how and what I was feeling , ans about the symptoms I had been experiencing . I felt I was in very safe hands and that the care and attention that I was receiving was 100% . I went away feeling that there was a light at the end of the tunnel .

Dr Sawcer waited for me as my transport was running late, he made me feel very comfortable and took the time to listen to me. He explained everything that was going to happen. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience under the circumstances.
