My mother was treated for a left hip fracture she had on sunday 23 june. The operation could not occur until the following tuesday 25 june due to availability of necessary equipment. The procedure went well and she made good progress recovering. She was released on sunday 7 july. Prior to this she asked whether or not she should be supplied with blood thinners to contunue with at home. She was told not and duly released. She continued to make good progress with care from family members at home. During the week of monday 22 july she became concerned about swelling and pain on her lower left leg, saw her local GP in shoreham-by-sea who arranged for her to be seen at worthing on friday 26 july where a blood clot was confirmed in her left leg. She was immediately put onto blood thinners to disperse the clot over time. Naturally she was very disappointed since she had asked about blood thinners prior to her release on sunday 7 july. She has been taking the blood thinners nut is now apparently allergic to the prescribed one and will need a different one. She has asked me to make this report with the hope this experience is not repeated. The consultant who she saw (with me) on the day of the clot diagnosis was most helpful with his explanations and apologised over the issue mentioning it is standard procedure for such patients to be on blood thinners to prevent possible clots for at least 4 weeks after release regardless of how well they are progressing. In fact this is what occurred when she broke her left hip originally many years ago.

Doctor Murphy provided me with a first class service earlier this year. His manner was totally professional, focused and caring. I had total confidence in him and the department at a time when I wasn't at all well. My sincere thanks.

Dr Murphy spoke to us in a clear and informative manner taking in to account the delicate nature of the matter being discussed. I felt that we were listened to and our opinion respected as well as Dr Murphy offering a medical perspective on the decision that needed to be undertaken, helping us as a family to reach a decision that we were all happy with. Dr Murphy's manner was polite and patient whilst remaining focused on the decision that needed to be made, I found him to be supportive and helpful.
