I am the consultant in charge of Mallard Ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. We are a 16 bed ward 'dementia friendly' caring for older people experiencing delirium and acute medical complications of dementia. The secret to Mallard ward (named after the locomotive built in Doncaster) is the staff who understand how to care and support people with delirium and dementia. Some aspects of care which we focus on specifically are: - Person-centred holistic care - Safety - Autonomy - China tea-cups - Dignity - Nutrition - Finger-foods - Cooked breakfasts - This is me - Multidisciplinary-integrated working - We have our own Older Peoples' Mental Health specialist nurse - Hydration - Continence - Compassion - Patient preferences - Open visiting (visit any time!) - We are obsessive about preventing hospital acquired infection (These aren't in order of importance or relevance) Areas of special interest to me are: Dementia, delirium, falls, patient safety, caring, compassion, palliation, person-centred care, the NHS, catheter-avoidance, antibiotic governance, patient happiness, staff happiness, zero-harm, holistic care, sleep patterns in delirium and dementia, cost-effective healthcare, sustainability, medicalisation of care, ageing, older people, nutrition, pressure area care, communication and team-working
