Written by a carer at Western General Hospital
8th February 2014

My son has severe autism and learning difficulties, he is 17 and a big lad. He needed a general anaesthetic in order for an MRI scan to be possible. This was quite an ordeal for him and for me. Dr Sutherland rang me in advance of our visit to discuss my son’s needs and the likely problems. This gave me confidence that his needs were more likely to be met, and had a practical benefit in that Dr Sutherland was able to chase up what pre-med had been successful in a previous operation in a different hospital. We were put near the top of the list on the day – waiting around with anyone like this is a nightmare – but we couldn’t get a side ward on our own as hoped because of emergency admissions. The hospital ward was very busy but we did cope and the procedure went ahead without problems. I thought Dr Sutherland listened to me and did all he could to make it easier for us in less than ideal circumstances, and I would recommend him to others.
