When I required a catheter ablation Dr Somani was recommended to me by another heart specialist. When first meeting Dr Somani his mix of professionalism, warmth and humour ensure that his impact is immediate. Throughout the consulting, preoperative process and the operation itself he was excellent, communicating at every stage and listening expertly. His description of the operation extended well past just the physical aspects. It was evident that the other professional staff at the Spire in Nottingham felt very comfortable around him which is always reassuring. His aftercare is also excellent, I recommend him wholeheartedly.

Both professionally and personally Dr Somani is a superb consultant. I had a PVI with him for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation a little over a year ago. Before the operation he took time to explain clearly what my options were and addressed a number of concerns sympathetically and helpfully. On the day of the procedure he saw me both before and after and was always reassuring and supportive. Aftercare has been excellent. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Dr Riyaz Somani is absolutely an excellent consultant. I had a VT ablation on 1 April 2015 which lasted over 8 hours. He explained before what would be involved in the procedure and afterwards came in the Ward to see me and asked if I was OK. He discharged me on a Easter Bank Holiday Tuesday. He asked if there was anything I wanted to know or any questions. He told me I could contact him if I had any problems. My impression of him was that he was a very caring person. He shook my hand and wished me well for the future. Great bloke. I cannot make any constructive suggestions on improving the care as it was excellent. I have been healthy since the procedure and have been given the all clear on my visit to Glenfield on 11 August.

I was admitted to Glenfield Hospital on the 19th march for a pulmonary vein ablation under the care of Dr Stafford , Unfortunately DR Stafford was of sick therefore my procedure was carried out by Dr Riyaz Somani. When he introduced himself saying he was going to do the procedure I was a little shocked he looked so young I thought he was the House officer!!! I asked him if he was competent and how many ablations he had carried out .However my worries were unfounded , I found him to be very caring answering many of my questions and putting me at ease as best he could as I was very apprehensive. Following my 6hr procedure under general anaesthetic not feeling too well on return to the ward he came to visit me on several occasions showing concern for my welfare, and on discharge he said any problems please contact him via ring back. Hopefully my problem will be resolved but will not been known for at least 3 months. Whatever the outcome he has shown to be a very caring and approachable Consultant.

Profile

I have trained in cardiology since 2002 and was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at the Glenfield Hospital, Leicester, in December 2014. I was also awarded a PhD from the University of Leeds in 2011 after a period of dedicated research in the field of cardiology. I have received extensive training in both general cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology at the Yorkshire Heart Centre in Leeds as well as at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada having successfully completed a two year fellowship (Diploma).

As well as general cardiology, my specific areas of interest are palpitations and heart rhythm disorders, radiofrequency ablation procedures, atrial fibrillation ablation, ventricular tachycardia ablation, pacemaker implantation, defibrillator implantation, cardiac resynchronisation therapy (biventricular pacing) for heart failure and the assessment of sudden cardiac death risk.

I perform over 200 procedures per year which include the following: Pulmonary vein isolation (AF ablation) for paroxysmal and persistent AF and VT ablation with epicardial access (using 3D mapping systems). Radiofrequency ablation for atrial flutter, atrial tachycardias and SVTs. Permanent pacemaker implantation (single and dual chamber), Loop recorder implantation, Implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD) therapy, Cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) for heart failure and cardioversion (internal and external). In addition I also have responsibilities for pacemaker interrogation and analysis, electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation, ECG monitoring, echocardiography, blood pressure assessment and treatment and exercise stress testing.
