I had tonsilitis repeatedly over a several years as diagnosed by my usual GP. I became used to spotting the symptoms as about an hour after onset I would feel achey all over and really ill, barely being able to walk, as well as an awfully sore throat which swelled up dramatically. On taking antibiotics the improvement was always dramatic and rapid (12-24hrs). On one occasion my usual doctor was not available and I was about to go away for the weekend when I felt the symptoms starting. I went home and arranged to see the duty doctor who was Dr. Bumrah. By the time I saw him, my throat was swelling up and extremely sore. I explained that I was used to this and that I had previously been diagnosed with tonsilitis which kept coming back every few months. I explained that I was going away and that it would be difficult for me to get to a doctor again and that it was getting worse quite quickly. He ignored my explanation and told me it was "probably just a virus" and would get better by itself. If I had not been feeling so ill, I would have argued and demanded to see someone else, but wasn't up to it. 12 hours later I could barely breathe as my throat was swelling up so much, and did not sleep all night. I managed to find a village hospital and the doctor I saw there said I had very bad tonsilitis and said if my breathing got that bad again I should phone for an ambulance....yes an ambulance, for something the doctor the doctor just dismissed about 12 hours earlier even though I had told him of my history! As a result of what she prescribed, I was feeling much better a couple of days later, but was left feeling very cross that I had been treated so badly by Dr. Bumrah.
