Profile

Paul is a consultant in Critical Care at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust and has been in post there since 2009. He has an interest in Using clinical information systems to deliver standardised high level care to all patients, their families and friends.

In addition to providing clinical care Paul was appointed to Medical Lead role in the Lancashire and South Cumbria Critical Care Network in 2016. Paul has been heavily involved in quality improvement, being a member of the Q community of the Health Foundation and holding a PG Cert in Improvement and innovation from CETAD at the University of Lancaster. He holds an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer post at the University of Central Lancashire, and has taught on the Critical Care Course at UCLan for many years. His leadership and management experience is recognized by him being appointed a Fellow of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management in 2022. Previously Paul was involved in Pre hospital emergency medicine as a flight doctor for the Great North Air Ambulance.

In addition to his substantive roles, Paul currently also holds the office of Honorary Secretary of the Intensive Care Society. He was a former Chair of the Society's Standards Division. He continues to be responsible for leading national work, such as the Guidelines for the Provision of Intensive Care Services (GPICS), setting the standard in which every ICU in the country should operate and is keen to develop environmentally sustainable Critical Care Units. He is heavily involved in the development of Enhanced Care Guidelines and led the updated consensus statement on Levels of Adult Critical Care
