I was a patient of his in the REH. He seemed absolutely convinced to diagnose me with a PD despite having one singular symptom of it (being suicidal) and literally not a single other symptom. I am autistic and female and I was so fed up of him telling me what my symptoms were (“your attempts are very impulsive” without even asking me if they were planned out in advance (they were and this was actually in my notes if he’d bothered to read them). He also seems to have a poor understanding of depression. On reading my notes shortly after being discharged he wrote things like “____ was socialising with other patients which is inconsistent with depression.” What did he expect me to do - lie in bed all day? When I tried to do that nursing staff would call me lazy and that I “wasn’t helping myself” and make me go out my room and lock it until nighttime. I did my best to stay out of trouble and make an effort to engage in activities and with other patients but Dr N just took it as “well clearly she isn’t depressed send her home”. Was also promised support from IHTT after I was sent home and they discharged me after dropping off a prescription and on reading my notes that was Dr N’s instructions despite the fact he told me to the contrary. He refused to let me be discharged when i requested discharge but then discharged me the following week when I wanted to stay for another session with the psychologist as that was helping me as I couldn’t get therapy in the community. Pretty much a joke he told me “all the resources to help you are in the community” whilst he simultaneously instructed MHAS and IHTT to withhold community support from me (it’s written in my notes). Because of what he wrote in my records I’ve been withholded support from MHAS almost a year later cos of his notes - as soon as I tell MHAS my name over the phone they tell me they’re not an appropriate resource for me and tell me to ring Samaritans or something. He doesn’t understand autistic people and how they present or communicate they’re struggling one bit. I communicate my struggling by saying I’m saying I’m struggling because my non verbal communication such as body language is not the same as neurotypicals. I don’t cry when I’m distressed I physically can’t. But because I don’t “look” distressed (except in an autistic meltdown) he interpreted that as me being attention seeking and manipulative (written in my notes). My community consultant and CPN understand my autism and how I communicate as they actually pay attention but Norman just doesn’t seem to have a basic grasp of autism.

Dr Nuttall is an “All rounder”. He listens, cares, and assessments can make the difference. Provided you are assured of this, you could not be in SAFER hands.

Dr Nuttall was the only doctor who appeared to be able to link practice and theory. After several years of unimaginable upset and distress, Dr Nuttall listened and altered his medication. This was followed with a period of intense medical supervision. My son went from a seriously ill man to a well man. I am happy to report my son and I have never looked back. My son continues to maintain good mental health more than three years on. My family’s experience of Dr Nuttall was/is as a highly skilled doctor that can be trusted. He listens and cares for patients and their families. A credit to the profession
