I was referred toDr Rowell following a diagnosis of a Squamous carcinoma right tonsil (T2 N2b). His secretary conatcted me within the same week and arranged an appointment for the following week at which I was treated with respect and courtesy. Dr Rowell, very clearly, explained the nature of my cancer and the course of action he proposed to cure me of it. He also clearly explained the tteatment process and what I could expect to encounter. He was accompanied by a radiotherapy professional ( Jamie Marshall) who was also very kind and helpful. I left the first consultation feeling very reassured and confident in the treatment I was about to receive. There was then a five week period during which my treatment was planned in detail and I had my mask made, chemo and radiotherapy interviews, and final fitting of the mask preparatory to treatment commencing. At all times I was respectfully handled and made to feel relaxed and confident about the forthcoming programme. Once treatment commenced I had a weekly consultation with Dr Rowell at which we reviewed my progress and reaction to the treatment regime. There were some issues with the PEG that was fitted for feeding purposes and Dr Rowell prescribed the relevant antibiotics to deal with the problem. He always took the time to listen to my experiences and appreciated my feelings. He worked very closely with his Macmillan nurse (Jayne) and together they made me feel that I was important to them both as a person and a patient. As the treatment regime developed Nick kept me informed of what possible side effects might develop and took immediate action to deal with these when they appeared. He was always available for advise and to provide reassurance when needed. Importantly, he was always positive and manifested a calm and relaxed attitude to my wife and I. Towards the end of he treatment we discussed what I could expect over the four to six weeks it would take for the effects of the radiotherapy to diminish. As I write this, three weeks into that time frame - he is spot on! I contacted him to arrange an early review of the date my PEG could be removed and he responded quickly and arrangements have already been put in place for the procedure. I have been completely satisfied by the performance of Nick and his team. I owe them my life and for that I am in their debt.
