I am writing this on behalf of my Mum, the patient. Dr Dunham was very friendly and chatty. A great patient manner. He explained my procedure very well at the bedside, and when I asked questions he listened and responded accordingly. I had a particular medical problem for the anesthetist, spondolocis in the neck, but he explained what he would do to try to prevent further neck problems post the operation. In the actual theatre, he spoke to me very nicely and I didn't feel any pain when the needle was inserted into my hand. As I have particularly small veins this is often a problem and I have known this procedure to take many attempts and heighten the stress pre theatre I also explained I am usually very very sick post a general anesthetic and he said he would give me a high dose of anti sickness drug. He did this and this was the first time that I wasn't physically sick post a major operation. Thank you this has aided my speedy recovery no end! I was able to go home after a short stay on the ward after a serious operation of a lumpectomy of the breast. The care I received was first class and no private treatment could have been any better. Thank you and best wishes in your career. Maureen Johnston and Family.

Response from Dr Mark Dunham

Thank you so much for taking the time to offer this detailed feedback. As an Anaesthetist getting quality feedback from patients can be tricky It's really valuable to hear back from patients a few days down the line when you better able to reflect on your experience with a degree of perspective (and no after effects of drugs on board!) I'm delighted that we managed to avoid postoperative nausea and vomiting following your anaesthetic at last. There are a number of measures we can take to address this common problem which I appreciate is very important to patients. We don't always succeed 100% of the time but it's fantastic to hear that we did on this occasion. Again this may be an outcome that we don't get to hear about since it often sets in long after a patient has left recovery. As you allude to, nausea and vomiting, is not only thoroughly unpleasant, but can delay overall recovery from the operation more generally - so investing the time and effort to maximise measures to avoid this is definitely the way to go. I guess one potential downside to online feedback is that older patients who are generally (but not always!) less "tech-savvy" may not be as well represented as younger patients. Obviously it's important to get feedback from as many patients from all backgrounds as possible. So many thanks for working together to relay this feedback to me. It was a pleasure to meet you both. Best wishes, Mark
