I recently had a gastroscopy performed by this doctor. It is a very unpleasant procedure and I have not tolerated it previously when they have used a local anaesthetic throat spray. I clearly explained that I needed IV sedation. He proceeded with a vey small amount of sedation and throat spray. This was aborted because of my inability to tolerate the passing of the endoscope down my throat. It was attempted several more times with small increases in the IV sedation, each time failing. Eventually he procedure was completed albeit with extreme discomfort on my part. I don’t believe the doctor listened to me in the first place and having seen the discomfort Iwas in should have given me adequate sedation after the first failed attempt, not that there would have been an initial failed attempt if he listened to me when I told him that I cannot tolerate this procedure unless I am sedated. I am sure he is a competent doctor but should be more patient focussed rather than wham bamm this is the last patient of the day, lets get it over with and all get home even if it does mean putting the patient through pain and extreme discomfort and reducing the post op recovery time!

I’ve only see this Dr when he carried out Gastroscopy (camera in throat then into stomach) for me on Friday 26.3.21 at Southend Hospital. Dr made me feel at ease, I’ve had this done a few times over 20+ years at Guys, but that doesn’t make it easier for me, & this definitely felt better than when I’ve had it done in the past. I think it helped to b laying on my left side, rather than on my back too. Thank u.
