Abrupt, blunt, delivered news of patient's imminent death with no care for relative's distress. Decided on changes to treatment without giving relative time to take in information and think. Doctor did not give patient or relative the choice for DNR, she took the decision herself, no discussion or explanation. Very unpleasant experience compared with experiences with other doctors in the same team.

Response from Dr Lucy Pain

I am so sorry to hear that you felt distressed following our consultation. It is always difficult to receive bad news but I make every effort to deliver it with compassion and understanding. Unfortunately as doctors we sometimes have to make decisions not to provide certain treatments eg CPR if they will cause more harm than good, even if they might appear desirable to a patient or their family. In these situations we always discuss our decisions with our colleagues and I make every effort to explain my rationale to patients and their families. This is the first time I have received negative feedback like this but I will reflect on it and welcome additional feedback from other patients/carers.
