We thought he was great. He was kind and compassionate and very sympathetic. We came away reassured and felt that we had been in very good and knowledgeable hands.

Dr Shields stands out for astonishingly poor care. I was so shocked by the course of one of (several car crash) appointment(s) that it took a long time to reset my thinking. After a fairly definitive mri, and him suggesting what the cause was, I returned to ask about the suggested illness (ms) because a symptom I attributed to something else (muscoloskeletal pain/arthritis) was not explained by X-rays which showed no arthritis. ‘No muscoloskeletal pain is not MS pain’ (check the nhs website - I was scratching my head) and plenty more dismissive commentary. On the way out, he cheerfully suggested I should be careful not to be ‘neurotic’ ….about the MRI full of lesions, clear X-rays and his own suggestion that it was very like MS. I thought it was a case of two people with PhDs trying to out-stubborn each other, but I have discovered I am not the only one to suffer his gaslighting. Get a second opinion as soon as possible!

After waiting months for an appointment and help, you hit this brick wall. Dreadful. Cold. Does not examine you. Tests you as if you are the one who has to have medical knowledge and if you are credible. Tells you just to live with it and throws a bunch of vitamins at you. Why is this person a doctor and in a specialist clinic is beyond me. Nobody expects miracles but this man basically dismisses you and makes you feel like you are wasting his time. This person should not be dealing with sensitive cases, he has zero empathy and just ticks off boxes at the cost of your well being. Avoid!

I was disappointed to not get the news I wanted but I completely appreciated the honesty of Dr Shields. I was given realistic information and I was listened to.

Not sure why he is actually a consultant. No compassion, interest or care shown. He asked me bare-boned questions and talked at me the rest of the consultation. Afterwards I cried because I felt I had been left without any hope. I would not recommend him to anyone.
