Written by a patient at Broadmead Surgery
11th July 2018

I saw Dr Mock as a new patient and it was my first visit to this surgery so I was not aware of the system for calling patients, inevitably this caused me to be late for Dr Mock who came out looking for me as I had just noticed my name written on the screen as I was sitting under it! I apologized for wasting 5 minutes of her time but I explained that at my previous surgery the name would be called by voice as the name is displayed on screen. Feeling under pressure with the little time left I quickly listed 3 things I came to visit for. I was taken aback when Dr Mock pointed out that only one thing can be covered per appointment. I have always let the GP's decide if another appointment needs to be made and have no problem with that, but what if the symptoms I have developed in the last week are all related...I think people should mention their medical issues briefly and the doctor should decide. I think it would have been a waste of valuable GP time for me to book an appointment for each issue! Luckily she managed to cover all 3 fairly quickly. I am happy with the way she dealt with my repeat prescription as the medication dosage I was on was too high according to my last blood test and my previous GP had not adjusted it accordingly even though I had told them I felt it was too high. My frequent shooting pains she put down to a pinched nerve but the only solution offered was to avoid the positions which trigger them. I found the solution rather odd but we were both rushed and I was relieved it was't related to my heart problems or referred pain...but perhaps I will need another appointment if this continues because I don't know what causes it - it's very random. She could clearly see I had an understanding of medical terms and asked what I was studying to which I answered I'm not studying I am a mum of 3. My looks are fairly deceptive and people continuously treat me like a young adult...but I am actually currently in my late 30s, mum of 3, studied 2 years in medicine, before becoming a graduate of Biomedical sciences. The majority of my extended family are Doctors in the NHS or abroad. I think all that shouldn't make a difference because a doctor should treat all patients equally regardless of who they are and a patient should be able to trust their doctor to provide the right care required. But this is where I feel I was failed by Dr Mock. I complained about frequent urination, a side pain since last week, and feeling unusually tired. I even bought a urine sample as I suspected it may have been a UTI. The urine dip test showed possible infection. She prescribed an antibiotic and I asked her how big the tablets were because I am unable to swallow the large capsules. She didn't know so offered for me to ask the pharmacist to see and maybe they could suggest an alternative if its too big, ring back, and get a different prescription. OK I said but mentioned that I was previously given liquid form antibiotic but she said we don't prescribe that for adults. Up until this point I would have given Dr Mock a 4 star review easily. She comes off a bit harsh but may not realise this. Then things took a bad turn when she questioned my ability to swallow large pills. "But you manage to take your medication fine?" she asked. I said yes because they are tiny. Then again she says but you should try to learn...to which I replied 'I have been trying for the last 20 years and after having 3 kids and trying to take my antenatal vitamins but not being able to I know I can't ...I have a really bad gag reflex. I have to crush them but you can't crush capsules.' I do not know what her reasons are but she decides then and there that instead she will send the urine to the lab for testing and see what is the best antibiotic for me, to avoid taking something that may be unnecessary since its such trouble. I was told to call back for results in 3 days. I personally didn't care because I hate taking antibiotics and the side pain was only a dull ache, but I knew with my background that if infections aren't treated promptly there is the chance they can get worse very quickly. Dr Mock was willing to take that chance and I lost all trust in her completely. I have been told by the doctors in my family that I should return and request the appropriate antibiotic in the best interest of my health.
