Apologise for running an hour late. Be friendlier, kinder and listen to the patient. It isn’t their fault their notes didn’t come through. Thank them for coming all this way and at least bringing some useful information with them. Don’t snap at them. Don’t bark at them. Don’t sigh about a difficult situation they didn’t create. Don’t try to give them an info sheet on IBS when they have already been attending gastroentology for a few years already and don’t have IBS. Don’t discharge them back to their GP when they are on medications that only you or your colleagues can instruct. Remember that they aren’t being paid to be there and none of this is their fault.

The care I received from Dr. Dalziel and his team when I had a colonoscopy 30/06/15 was outstanding. I had previously had a colonoscopy from another team and found the whole procedure distressing and was therefore very anxious about going through it all again. I needn't have worried, Dr. Dalziel (Hugh) and his team listened to my concerns and put me at ease, treating me with the utmost respect at all times. Thanks for making an unpleasant experience more bearable. Elaine R. Dundee
