Dr Downton first treated me two years ago initially for arthritis in my hip and knee. Unrelated investigations uncovered a few other issues hitherto unknown to me, but that is not the reason for writing this review. Doctor Downton does not patronise, and communicates with empathy and pragmatism and in a manner that is more conversational than tutorial. This is for me a refreshing approach which won my respect and trust very early on in our doctor-patient relationship. I live a fast paced and hectic lifestyle with a work hard and play hard approach to life. The latter does not always conform to the ideal of doctors, but without banging a bible - Doctor Downton has made me re-think and change certain lifestyle aspects. I have not been backward in coming forwards when it comes to criticising the approach of one or two of her more senior peers who have an authoritarian disdainful and patronising approach, the net effect of their 'care' increasing blood pressure not reducing it. They would do well to take a leaf from Doctor Downton's book. I am not sure whether Doctor Downton's approach is as much to do with her training in bedside manner as it is with her own personality - but I do know that for me it works, and in as much I hope I do not have cause to visit her that often, I will instinctively feel in safe hands when I do have to.
