Gavin qualified in Leicester in 1993 and trained in infectious diseases in Leeds, Sheffield and Dundee, including a Doctor of Medicine (MD) research degree at the University of Dundee. He was appointed consultant in infectious diseases at Hull & East Yorkshire Hospitals in 2004 and is the trust's lead on antibiotic stewardship, orthopaedic infection, outpatient intravenous antibiotic therapy (aka OPAT), and infection research/teaching. He has published research articles about long-term mortality after bloodstream infection (sometimes called septicaemia), the epidemiology of invasive pneumococcal disease and community-associated MRSA, and the management of pneumonia. He is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the Hull York Medical School, an affiliated clinical staff member of the Centre for Immunology and Infection at the University of York, a British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC) national council member, and an associate editor for the BMC Infectious Diseases journal.
