I was looking for help to diagnose potential sleep apnoea in 2020, but this could not be arranged during Covid. I was told by Dr Brohan that the sleep clinic was in any case in back log so I could not be put on their list. I’ve suffered from very severe insomnia for twenty five years so should have been a candidate for some proper investigations! (I had been offered a sleep test in London in 2014 but sadly was unable to attend because of financial problems.) A year later in 2021, her colleague Dr Kilbane was in touch via telephone. He said that based on the private in-home test I had done to diagnose sleep apnoea that came out negative, they could offer me an in-home test that would record potential restlessness during sleep. Why did Dr Brohan not suggest this alternative? I accepted this and did my best to follow the procedure, but unfortunately I was too stressed from having to go and pick up the device the day before to actually fall asleep when it started recording at 10 pm. It recorded hours of me being awake and trying to calm my stress induced tachycardia with breathing exercises. I only got two hours of sleep until the device stopped recording at 7 am. The wakefulness did not appear in the transcript and Dr Brohan consequently diagnosed my breathing exercises as sleep apnoea, but it was ‘nothing to worry about’. She said, quite coldly, that I probably suffered from heart failure, and discharged me from the sleep clinic. She acknowledged some restlessness but denied me access to medication because I was using benzodiazepines. Of course I was using benzos because I had nothing else at the time! She completely ignored the severity of my problem with restless legs syndrome and complicated my access to proper care. Apparently there was also some problem with the recording at their end so there was barely any information on the test. You’d get more out of a Fitbit. For me, it was a dreadful experience with very little to show for, only a few words about suspected RLS and maybe PLM. I could now say to other doctors that restless legs syndrome had been recorded but all the rest was a misinterpretation and I had neither sleep apnoea nor heart failure. I now receive the proper medication from my GP - I have refractory restless legs syndrome.

Dr Brohan is a straight talking, caring and totally honest. She gives her patient confidence and belief that the treatment will work and the most important thing is……she cares. An excellent doctor and I’m glad I am under her care.
