Dr Uncles, who administered the anaesthesia, and his team who assessed me pre-operatively, were outstanding. The pre-operative assessment was thorough and reassuring; I was treated as an individual and the details of the anaesthetic approach to be taken was given to me. This included details of the second generation laryngeal mask, use of oxygen during the operation for the upper respiratory tract, with anaesthesia given via IV as well as perioperative steroid use. We also discussed the problems I would have with opiate-based pain relief and alternatives were given. This was very helpful to me and I felt safe prior to the operation. An HDU bed had been arranged for me should I have needed it. I have a history of breathing issues including anaphlaxis, allergic asthma and bronchiectasis. Twelve previous, short, operations over 40 years for nasal polyps had always left me with shallow, suppressed breathing in recovery and a great deal of anxiety, sometimes having to 'walk the ward' to recover from the anaesthetic and being unable to rest post surgery. I am a fit 61 year old, non smoker, and I had taken up a training regime of swimming and walking every day to ensure I was physically ready for the operation, although was aware that I could still react badly to the anaesthetic. However, for this longer breast cancer operation, I came around in recovery quickly and with no ill effects whatsoever. This continued throughout my overnight stay on the ward which was an enormous relief to me and my family. I was kept on oxygen overnight and my breathing was completely stable. I did not need the HDU bed. Dr Uncles visited me on the ward the following morning to see how I had fared overnight which I also felt was reassuring. I cannot thank Dr Uncles and his team enough. I am fully aware that the anaesthesia is a key part of any operation and feel that anaesthetists do not always get the credit they should. I am relieved to have come through this part of mt treatment unscathed. Thank you.
