I had the benefit of Bupa last year. I saw my NHS doctor before attending Dr Shuttleworth at the Nuffield, having been advised, by BUPA he was on their register. Given BUPA paid £200 and I paid the £50 excess, I was staggered by his dismissive attitude towards my NHS doctor's suggestions of Bowens Disease. He tutted and suggested diagnosis should be left to the professionals. Dr Shuttleworth took no longer than 5 minutes to take cursory looks at my body before suggesting "lets assume your doctor is right about the Bowens. I also asked him to look at my nose and he suggested treating it with the same medication - efudix. It did not work on my nose, and having last week been referred to my local hospital, the consultant said it would not have worked because it was eczema, not Keratosis. The NHS consultant was thorough, took time to draw arrows of over 8 other UV affected lesions in order for me to treat all effectively. The hospital will be making a follow-up appointment to monitor progress. By the way - the NHS consultant was also able to identify long-covid skin conditions which Dr Shuttleworth was too concentrated on his fee to bother with. Apparently "you get what you pay for". Neither I nor Bupa got that.

What a lovely experience Dr Shuttleworth is very knowledgable caring and professional. I loved his consultation manner which although a serious matter was jovial and positive. The NHS had failed me by not taking me seriously Dr Shuttleworth was worth self funding as I received a timely diagnosis and a date for surgery at my first visit. His surgical technique was amazing the procedure was carried out deftly with minimal discomfort The surgery, unavoidably, left a scar on my cheek which looks aesthetically amazing after one week I am so pleased. I have been a nurse for the NHS for 46 years and I highly recommend this competent clever man. I would have no hesitation to see him again privately. With gratitude and thanks Dr Shuttleworth.

I was a patient of Dr. David Suttleworths’ for very many years, seeing him as both an outpatient and an inpatient in the old Essex County Hospital. I had previously been treated by a consultant who never actually looked at most of my chronic eczema and Dr Shuttleworth just looked at the lot and came up with a gameplan which started on the bottom rung of the ladder and gradually climbed to the top. He was successful and I was a success and in due course I was freed from a body covered in itchy oozing scabs to a bright and cheery young woman. It took some time and then after very many years I overlooked an appointment and the NHS saw fit to say that was it. I took that very personally as I had always been a good attender as the visits were so terribly important to me. I gradually stopped taking the azathioprine and have been lucky enough to continue with only the mildest patches of eczema and in no way life altering. Whether or not there is a real link, I have now a condition known as lichen scloerosus which has me attending hospital and being seen by a gynaecologist and Dr. Shuttleworth’s one time nurse, Sue, who is as lovely now as she was back then. So I would rate this doctor 10/10 with a terrific knowledge of most things and ALL things dermatological. I really hope this charming doctor gets to read my review and if he should I would like just to add an amusing anecdote when he had a student and pointed to part of my face that ‘had atrophied.’ I so wanted to say….’hey, that’s my face you’re talking about!! A very sincere thank you to this doctor. I won’t see him again but he really gave me my life back. xx

I paid to see this consultant privately at Nuffield Ipswich Hospital. He seemed pleasant enough. He examined my rash and said it was textbook urticaria, and unfortunately there was no cure! He did offer me a drug that could possibly clear my condition, but it comes with its risks, and that I would be monitored whilst taking it. He also mentioned that if I come off the drug, my condition would come back. Fair enough! I suggested maybe some testing could be done, maybe bloods, allergy to find a root cause, but he would have none of it. He told me it’s not caused by anything I eat, drink or I am doing. As my appointment was coming to an end (20 mins) he got his payment machine out pretty rapidly. I thought that was quite insensitive. I came out feeling deflated and a complete waste of time and my hard earned money. I would not see this consultant again.

What a welcome experience. A Medical Consultant who goes out of his way to give immediate assistance and guidance, both in the actual diagnosis of a high irritation, but also to suggest the required medication. All at an out of hours telephone call. The follow up appointment at Nuffield was equally professional, fully diagnosed in a calm, friendly and above all couched in terms that were exact but understandable. Restores one trust in the Medical profession. Many thanks again
