It was my great privilege to work as Secretary to Dr Abankwa for 5 years from the time when he first took up his consultancy post at Morriston hospital in Swansea through to when I left the ABMU trust and moved to Prince Philip hospital. He was always dedicated to his patients, supportive of his colleague and an all round decent human being who really cared about his work. There were very many hours that he put into ensuring that his patients received not only the care they needed but, more importantly, the care he felt they deserved and he never stinted in his professional duties to ensure that the Rehabilitation Service delivered on its promises. I witnessed at first hand how much effort and care he put into looking after his patients and have no doubts about his sincerity regarding the fact that he viewed them as 'people' first and patients second. Due to the nature of the specialty many patients were reviewed by David on a very regular and long term basis many commencing in the Outpatient Clinics and then, in some instances, moving on to reviews in their own homes and often finally needing to be seen in Care/Nursing homes. In all instances his focus of care was obviously firstly for the patient but secondly and just as importantly for their family in that he always sought to provide support to them so that they in turn could support the patient. David started his consultancy life as a young, caring doctor who was looking to make a difference and I believe firmly that he has continued to care, continued to strive and continued to believe in people, which is a great back story to the 'older' and wiser consultant that he has undoubtedly become. I will always have a great regard for David Abankwa as a clinician and as a caring human being who has high standards which he employs in both his working and home life.
