Whilst I appreciate that the consultant is busy and under pressure I think a charming manner and nice smile does not make up for basic failings. As a patient with some recent cognative impairment I had my confidence knocked and left the consultation feeling very upset as I did not have the chance to ask the things that I wanted or explain the difficulties I was experiencing. I found the consultant reading and writing while I was trying to describe a difficult matter to be rude. Dismissive one word answers and statements without explanation were not helpful. I felt he did not look beyond the obviouse and was extreamly skillful at changing the subject so I could not ask further questions or challenge what was said. I usually feel comfortable speaking with most people but this guy pulled the rug from under me by his manner. However short the consultation showing basic respect and care to the patient would improve the experience.

I visited this consultant for a 2nd opinion, I arranged for my MRI scans and data to be shipped to Walton centre for prior review, and found a welcoming Doctor who knew his medicine. He confirmed the 2nd opinion and solved many 'surrounding' neuro problems that I had which in the end were nothing to do with the multiple sclerosis, but which were masking it,making diagnosis messy. His bedside manner is good but like many consultants he tries hard to get through many cases in a day so listens as he writes - some may find this off putting - but it is for a reason to get as much information about you as possible, solve your problems and get you on your way. If you have an unclear MS / NMO / Devics / Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis then have your GP book a 2nd opinion appointment with this doctor and go to Liverpool to see him. Do not be put off by the slightly old fashioned manners of the nursing and reception staff of this hospital. You are there for the knowledge and excellence of this consultant who has spent some 18 months or more in the USA studying rare neurological diseases.
