My Mum received poor care and even worse communication following the discovery of a Squamous Cell Carcinoma last year. She was not given the opportunity to see an Oncologist but was telephoned to be told that there had been a Multidisciplinary meeting and the decision at that meeting on discussing her case was that no surgery, chemo or radiotherapy would be offered as the tumour was a rare one that would not respond to Radiotherapy and that due to other existing health issues surgery and chemotherapy were not an option. They said they would make a palliative care referral. We were absolutely devastated. I made a formal complaint and the result, which took time we could ill afford, concluded that we could have a referral for a second opinion. This took from June 2023 to February 2024. We saw Professor Alison Birtle yesterday and although agreeing with the last Consultant that Surgery and Chemotherapy were not appropriate for Mum, she disagreed with regards to the refusal of radiotherapy as she explained that it may not be as responsive as with a regular bladder tumour but it certainly does respond. She explained everything clearly and did not give us any false hope. Initial tests were done and first radiotherapy session provisionally booked. I can honestly say that Professor Birtle has done More in the last 3 weeks than the previous team did in 8 months. Due to the time lag, sadly the tumour and lymph node have grown but at least there is a plan of care and we have been given some hope. I would highly recommend Professor Birtle, her PA Joanna and all of the team at Rosemere Cancer Centre who do amazing work in an extremely busy unit delivering bespoke care for their patients. Well done to all and thank you so much.

Dr. Birtle welcomed us warmly and made me feel very comfortable talking to her. She explained my treatment was going to be like looking forward. She made sure I understood everything she had explained, even showing me pictures of where I would be having my Radiotherapy so I wouldn't be so nervous when I went. Both my wife and I are so grateful that I am under her care. I would recommend Dr. A. Birtle to anyone. Alf Hill.

Yesterday was my second consultation. Prof Birtle saw me on time in the company of the CNS. She listened attentively and responded clearly to my questions. Her reporting of where we were on the pathway and what lies ahead was was completely clear, When I posed an unanswerable question she responded by acknowledging it was unanswerable and did not obfuscate for which I was grateful. Many metaphors exist to describe how one deals with chronic illness, my relationship with her and the trust I have in her renders such metaphors irrelevant. She is my physician, my guide, my mentor and, I believe, my friend. As such she has my complete trust and admiration.

Pro Alison Birtle is the best Doctor I have ever come across. We attended her clinic in Morecambe she is my husbands Oncologist. She spent about an hour with us, she explained the type of cancer and what the treatment would be. She then explained the treatment and why it was the best treatment for this type of cancer. I had a list of questions but didn’t need them as she really did answer everything. My husband is going forward knowing that she will be there, in the background, doing her best with the treatment, and anything he doesn’t understand he would feel more than comfortable asking for her input. Thank you for your understanding and clear explanation at a very difficult time, we came away from the appointment with the knowledge that we understood a great deal more and my husband felt listen to.

Professor Birtle has a special gift at putting you at ease and feeling very comfortable in her presence. She gave my wife  and I, a very clear and comprehensive  explanation of my ongoing care  and I have total confidence in her and my  treatment plan. Thankyou
