I was referred to Dr Birtle when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in June 2020, and since then she has looked after me in every way necessary. My hormone treatment was started immediately, and my radiotherapy at The Rosemere Centre in Preston was marvellous. The staff there could not have been more caring, capable and compassionate. Throughout this time Dr Birtle was being informed of my progress, and I knew that I could approach her with any issue that arose. I have now been signed off until November, and I have every confidence that the marvellous care that I have received to date will continue in the future. I have absolute faith in her ability and professionalism - we are all very fortunate to have people like her in the NHS looking after us.

I consider I’ve been very fortunate to have had Dr Birtle as my oncologist since prostate cancer was diagnosed just over a year ago. My four consultations to date with her have been via video link, an arrangement which has worked very well. This could all have been very stressful but her kind and thoughtful approach put me at ease immediately. Unfortunately the originally recommended treatment of external beam radiography has not proved possible, this partly due to the unusual positioning of my colon which could render radiotherapy harmful, but also chronic constipation which has meant the bowel could not be cleared. Dr Birtle has shown great interest and concern about my case, and has gone to quite some lengths in consulting colleagues in the profession about possible alternative treatments, but none of these has been thought appropriate to my condition. So my principal treatment to date has been quarterly hormone injections, with these likely to continue for the foreseeable future. My latest PSA reading was down to a level pleasing both to her and to me. Aside from this, Dr Birtle continues to show interest in, and seek possible remedies for, my bad bowel habits which have to some extent affected my quality of life at times, and I shall owe it to her if these problems are ever cleared up. So, in conclusion I feel privileged to have had Dr Birtle’s great care not only in her specialist subject, but also for my more general wellbeing.

Dr Birtle has been my oncologist since early 2019. Prior to Covid I had frequent face-to-face meetings with her and occasionally with her colleagues, who have all proved equally caring and professional, putting me at ease and answering any questions I have clearly and in detail. Since Covid, consultations have been via video link; throughout this time Dr Birtle has been very supportive and positive about my treatment, arranging further consultations, scans etc. promptly when she thought it necessary. As Covid restrictions allow I'm looking forward to meeting her again. I feel I have the best possible team looking after me — I couldn't be in better hands. I recommend her highly.
