Written by a patient at St John's Hospital at Howden
28th August 2016

I probably presented as a difficult patient with a medical problem on a busy Friday night. The medical problem presented itself overnight and could have been a life-changer therefore it required to be assessed at the Medical Emergency Unit. I am a single carer to a mother with advanced Alzheimer's Disease so I was worried about her and what she might do. The ward staff began a partial assessment on the Friday evening. I had not met Dr Harmouche at that time but was able to observe him hurrying up and down the corridor and could hear him speaking to staff in an exact but pleasant, calm manner. The ward was apparently exceptionally busy that night. I had an X-ray and to accommodate the needs of my mother was reluctantly let out to come back on the Saturday morning. I was 'phoned by the nurse (Anne) at my house at 9 a.m. to advise me Dr Harmouche would see me that morning. I went straight to the hospital, met Dr Harmouche who quickly and efficient considered the various possibilities in the most lovely engaging manner. He was very kind and inclusive to the doctor and nurse assisting him and made me feel as though I was his total focus despite the ward being full. Within minutes he had me assessed and sent off for a CT scan in no time at all. Dr Harmouche then returned to advise me the worst case scenario had been ruled out and was prescribed medication to treat the symptoms of a much lesser medical issue. I only spent minutes with Dr Harmouche but I felt he was totally present, very kind, knowledgeable, efficient, accommodating and a wonderful example of those who work in the NHS. As a consultant he exemplified how the accompanying power and status which is inherent in his role can be utilised for the good of all.
