Prior to meeting Dr Hakim, my health was in rapid decline. I had reached the point where I had simply no option but to leave law school, as I was not able to cope day-to-day with the pain and dysfunction. Despite consulting with a plethora of doctors, I was unable to find one that could explain or treat my many worsening symptoms. Dr Hakim diagnosed me with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome during my first consultation, and designed a plan of action immediately. The reassurance of a diagnosis, combined with access to an amazing team that has gone above and beyond to help me manage my symptoms, has without a doubt changed my life. With Dr Hakim's help, I became physically able to return to university, and graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Law. I have absolutely no doubt that without Dr Hakim's help and support over the last few years, this would not have been possible. Dr Hakim is truly such an amazing doctor, and his expertise is matched by his wonderful, caring bedside manner. I honestly cannot thank him enough.

My son saw Dr Hakim around a year ago. He was diagnosed with EDS. In consultation he was charming and very reassuring. He said that things would very much improve with the changes we were going to make. He gave my son a very good prognosis and we were satisfied things would improve. They did not. Unfortunately when it comes to EDS all Alan Hakim can do is prescribe physiotherapy. He is extremely polite when you are paying £300 per hour but once you are out of that office please do not expect the same treatment. I would advice anyone to go and see a physiotherapist that specialises in EDS for a diagnosis and treatment rather than spending all that money on not very much at all. I know people out there with chronic pain are looking for someone with the answers and I'm sorry to say, Dr. Hakim does not. Just to reiterate, all he can do for the EDS3 is prescribe physiotherapy. (you can book to go straight to the physiotherapist at St Johns and Elizabeth),

Response from Dr Alan Hakim

Thank you for the feedback. I am sorry to read that your son has not improved. I am not sure that we have had the opportunity to review things and discuss why this is the case. As such I not able to respond to anything specific and would be grateful if your son would contact me to discuss thing further. I cannot accept that 'all [ I ] can do is offer physiotherapy'. I am an Acute Physician and Rheumatologist with a broad medical acumen, an armory of different treatments that I can offer, and I work with an expert multi-disciplinary team. Many of my patients with highly complex concerns have accessed many modalities of treatment and expert opinion through me. I am not sure what is meant by 'once you are out of the office please do not expect the same treatment'. I offer follow up advice to all my patients, and I make it clear I am very happy to respond to email and phone calls. I will do this for free. I do this all the time, and 7 days a week. If there is a suggestion here that in some way my service stops when you leave the room I take exception to that, not just for myself but on behalf of all those of my patients, parents, carers, and colleagues who know this is simply not the case. I do agree that many people would benefit from working with a physiotherapist, and do not need to see a doctor. I would be (and I have been as several of my patients will know) the first to say 'you don't need me', and I have referred straight on to physiotherapy without charging a fee. However, the vast majority come to see me because they have lots of complex issues that require lots of different approaches to their management - not just physiotherapy. Finally, I do allow self referral because it is often easier for patients, but I do not solicit business. Several people have contacted my office first to see if we are the right people to help and we would advise accordingly and without charge. Alan Hakim

Dr Hakim has restored my faith in the medical profession. Honestly, after years of seeing various consultants at many hospitals for varying symptoms and a lot of the time being dismissed, Dr Hakim finally pieced the puzzle together for me. He was very empathetic, listened to everything me and my husband asked, read every word of my (lengthy!) medical history and did a very thorough examination. Nothing was too much trouble and he explained everything very thoroughly. It is a month since I saw Dr Hakim and I now have a detailed report to show to other consultants and my GP involved in my care in the future with clear recommended next steps and tests that I now need to arrange via my GP. Dr Hakim gave me advice on pain management, physio and medication - everything that I desperately needed! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dr Hakim to anyone else.

as a private aka paying for myself paitent the only downside was the 2 and a bit month wait, however i wish i had summonded the courage to pay for this sooner. it was so nice to meet someone friendly, who totally understood where my body was and what hypermobility HMS was and whom explained it to me, rther than dimissing it etc. i liked how he never critisced his other medical collagues - some of whom I had been 'battling with'. I hope now that his report is listened to and that my care can finally move on to keeping what i have, so we can hopefully gain some mobility etc back...which if possible would be amazing. Totally amazing - seocnd report i ever received that made me burst into tears (first was my dyspraxia report) - because the person writing it finally got what my body/head was saying and had been overlooked by others. Thank you to the lovely staff at the venue, and the lovely Dr Hakim, for coping witht his slightly emotional lady, and i hope i can find funds to continue to work together and continue my journey to the best possible outcome - you made me feel there is a chance of better futures rather than giving up.
