Movicol

I have a lazy bowel and some prolapse which left me struggling to open my bowels and caused dire constipation. I don't know what I would have done without it. I was in a terrible state for years. I take half a sachet in the evening every day and never have a problem. So happy.
Movicol was prescribed by the pharmacist at my GP's surgery. I took it as prescribed and, as a result, have had an awful week. It helped with the constipation but I will never take it again. For days I have felt as if I have been kicked in the stomach by a very strong horse. I am also completely drained of energy - I live alone and, at the moment, can hardly do the basics. I have lost a week of my life. I will never touch Movicol again.
My constipation was secondary to gastroparesis. Actilax simply created foul wind. Magnesia San Pellegrino was ‘violently’ effective. ‘Oily’ preparations hopeless. Finally, after being totally blocked for ~ 6 days had truly distressing use of Microlax enemas to pass huge amount of large hard faeces’. I almost passed out on the cold, cold floor!
1 month ago I commenced Movicol, 1 sachet daily and have effortlessly passed perfect ‘sinking’ faeces daily. This product is absolutely amazing!
I would never use it again. It made me sore and bleed. I wanted some thing to ease my constipation straight away. Not walking in town when it starts to work. I had half my colon removed in 2005 and was moniter for 5years. My costipation grew worse and I was given tests. Mow I am 74years it is getting worse where I remove stools with a gloved finger with KPJelly or suppositories which you can get from Boots. These don't make you bleed or make you sore. Tell your GP what side effects you have and please do not suffer.
I have been on Movicol for 10 years. I was prescribed it when I was younger because I had constant constipation. When I was terribly constipated movicol was helpful. I have struggled with bloating, nausea and abdominal pain for the most part. I am now transitioning from movicol to fibre supplements, my bowel is now dependent on movicol so I have to slowly wean myself off of it. Movicol did not improve my quality of life, it helped stop constipation, but the side effects almost make it not worth it. I wish my doctors had said use laxatives to move your bowel, but then take fibre supplements. Movicol, in my opinion, is more of a quick fix than a long term solution.
