I was prescribed Atarax for a severe outbreak of hives after a knee replacement (maybe no connection between those two, who knows) , which lasted in fact for over a year. When the hives became very severe, I was given a brief dose of steroids for just a few weeks which knocked them on the head, but the only thing (and we tried a lot of things) which helped to keep the hives at bay was Atarax. It makes you slightly sleepy the next day, but not in a major way. I only took a very small dose, but it worked well.
