Miss Iona Collins was very good at listening to me about my condition, she was very understanding and talked to me in a way that i could understand. When leaving my appointment i felt informed and confident that she would be able to help me. I was happy to ask questions which she answered fully. I would recommend her to others, as i feel she has her patients best interest at heart.

Really impressed after meeting Dr Collins for the first time. She took time to explain the scan that I had had and the possible treatments. She was very thorough and took time to answer questions clearly and to listen to what I had to say. I did not feel at all rushed. NHS needs more doctors like this. My wife and I were with her for at least half an hour and then went off for an X-ray with instructions to knock on door when we were back. We then spent more time with Dr Collins whilst she checked out the X-ray and decided on best course of action. I don't know how long an appointment each patient is allocated but perhaps it would be best to allow longer time for each consultation so other patients are not kept waiting to long. The clinic was already running nearly an hour late when we went in to see Dr Collins.

Excellent doctor/consultant/surgeon. Many thanks for the consultation and taking the time to explain my scan, in detail, the options and explanations and above all listening to me. It is good to speak with a doctor who does NOT jump to immediate conclusions and blames the patient's weight for everything (sorry but most doctors do this for every single ailment if you are overweight). An absolute pleasure to meet you and many thanks. Have a very happy new year.

Having had tw o microdisectomies in the past, and still suffering back pain, this was the first time I have had everything explained to me, Also a course of treatment that hopefully will reduce if not actually relieve totally the amount of pain. I feel relieved and positive after one appointment with Dr Collins

1st consultation and was impressed with the relaxed and professional way I was treated. Explained everything clearly and came away feeling that my medical problem would be resolved. I was made to feel that I was in good hands and was treated as an individual and not a number which I believe is important to any patient

Profile

I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon with a full time NHS practice based in Morriston Hospital, Swansea. The Swansea- based spinal service geographically serves the population of South West Wales from Bridgend to Aberystwyth.
I grew up in Llantrisant, South Wales and I was educated through the Welsh language education system. I subsequently moved to London and graduated from St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in 1996 with MBBS and BMedSci(Hons) degrees.
I completed my basic surgical training in 1997 in Oxford, gaining my MRCS certification. I then pursued orthopaedic specialisation firstly in New Zealand and then Scotland, before commencing a 6 year orthopaedic training rotation back in Oxford in 2002.
In 2006, following my FRCS(Orth) examinations, I chose to sub-specialise my further training purely in spinal surgery. My spinal fellowships were based in Oxford, Nottingham and Sydney, Australia, totalling two years.
I returned from Sydney in 2008 to take up my first consultant position at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham. The opportunity to be a founding member of the newly-opened spinal unit in Swansea brought me back to my homeland of South Wales in 2011.
I have experience of delivering fully comprehensive spinal care, from cervical spine to sacrum. I offer clinical consultations, spinal expert witness services, spinal surgery, spinal injections and spinal cementing procedures along with appropriate aftercare. I have experience of spinal problems relating to physical training having been a keen sportswoman (Women’s captain St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Rowing Club, member of Lea Rowing club, Women’s vice-captain St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Squash club and member of Bicester Hockey club while training in Oxford).
