It is inevitable that you will lose some dignity when you attend a hospital for surgery but everyone involved did their best to make me feel comfortable, both physically and mentally. The room that I was allocated before and after the operation was more that adequate. It was however much hotter that I would have liked and there was no way to lower the temperature or increase ventilation.Taking the experience as a whole, these are minor observations.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and involved me in decisions about my care. I was kept informed of the details of my treatment and all risks and trade-offs involved. I made the choice not to have mesh implanted as I had heard it increased the risk of infection and other side-effects. My surgery was delayed, which was unpleasant as I had to maintain fasting for a much longer period of time than planned. The staff nevertheless kept me updated. After the surgery, I sustained very minor nerve damage, which means that I have lost sensation in a small area of skin on my thigh. Apart from that I had no side-effects and my recovery was unproblematic.
