Review of Queen’s - Accident & Emergency
29th May 2024

On arrival, very speedy and organised initial assessment. After which it went down hill — was moved to a waiting room with 20+ people waiting, and had to wait there for 14+ hours not being told anything or being seen by any nurses or Drs. In the end we had to chase the nursing staff as to when I would be seen. When you feel unwell this is very poor not being told what’s going on and to wait for such a long time is unacceptable which in turn makes you feel more unwell.

Suggested improvements
All patients could be communicated with with regards to waiting time. Patients could be checked on in waiting area not just left when feeling unwell. Uncomfortable seating to wait in for long periods of time, not a big enough waiting area.

Awful 24 hours waiting on the metal chair or even the floor. No one cares if you are in pain or danger. Non professional nurses keep poking your hands trying to get into vein. After taking blood they poke you again for inserting cannula (why can’t it be done in one go. All my hands are in a horrible bruises). In the end I got no diagnosis and was sent back home with pain

Suggested improvements
Everything You are not the only country with lots of people and I’ve seen such a disorganised mess anywhere else.

Left in corridor without food or drink. Was not told what was happening. Incontinent and left for hours. Was not given my medication

Suggested improvements
Communicate better and improve bedside manner. Ensure patient understands what is happening. Treat patient with dignity rather than leaving them soiled on a trolley in the corridor for hours

Had to wait over 12 hours to been seen by a medical staff after initial triage. The long wait is unacceptable especially when anyone go to A&E only in emergency. There is no indication of when one will be seen. Despite the staff feeling us that ithe wait will be over 10 hours after the initial triage, patients are not given the option of going back home and returning after 10 hours. Staff was very clear that if anyone leaves, the clock will reset when they come back the next day. Sitting for over 12 hours, with suspected stroke and no option to go back home and get a little rest - I felt even worse than at the beginning of this ordeal. Surely there is a better way to manage, with some consideration shown to patients who are already suffering. Very disappointed

Suggested improvements
Give patients the option to go back home if wait times are over 5 hours. It may not be safe in all cases but surely some patients can be allowed to go home and rest after they have been triaged. How is making them wait for 12 hours, sitting in hard chairs, is a better option? We were told that if we want to leave, the staff can discharge us but then if we come back the next day, the clock resets. If it is safe for the staff to give us the option to discharge ourselves, surely some assessment would have been done by the staff to give us that option! Why insist on resetting the clock the next day?

Review of Same Day Emergency Care - Queens

The wait time was ridiculous. We arrived at 11pm and at 2pm we were told we would have to wait 12-14 hours to see a doctor, this was after x-rays and blood tests were already taken. We self discharged only to find out days later that my Mum had had a heart attack.

Suggested improvements
Better communication, you sit in waiting rooms for hours and nothing happens. There needs to be transparency and better comms with everyone so you know what’s going on, how long to wait and where you are in the queue. Several people were very stressed and asked whoever they could find only to be looked at and then walked away. Many patients were giving up and self discharging because of the wait, ourselves included.

I felt the people I spoke with were all kind and professional, but the organisation left a bit to be desired. It was not very well sign posted to get checked in, in addition to that it was a very long walk for someone in pain. Following that there were not clear instructions as to where to go next. The initial part was timely up until I was triaged, then the wait for nearly 7 hours, and the seating was very poor and the update information to those waiting was very slow.

Suggested improvements
Overall, after a long wait and few tests they sent me on my way with pain medication but no further instructions, such as going back to my doctor or seeing a physio. They also gave me pain medication whilst I was there, which meant by the time they run the tests my pain wasn’t so bad, so I do feel this gave a true reflection of the pain I was in.

I was brought in by ambulance, ( the ambulance staff were amazing) it all went very downhill onvlce the hospital staff at queens took over. I was left in agony in a corridor for 14 hours, I should have had an emergency MRI scan but was told by the doctor after 14 hours of waiting that I had to wait for an appointment for an mri which I am still waiting for, which is in 4 weeks time (ridiculous). I was also kept waiting in the wrong corridor apparently. The nurses were useless no care or consideration for my pain at all , I will not be going to that hospital again , rude nurses, rude doctors, only pain relief offered was paracetamol (again ridiculous) if paracetamol would have helped I can assure you I would not have called an ambulance. 14 hours waiting was only offered a drink once. My blood pressure was low and instead of getting fluids in me through a drip they kept telling me to drink more water ,which was not actually offered to me, so impossible really. I was not kept up to date with any info at all the whole process was a shambles.

Suggested improvements
Everything could have been done better, was a very awful experience
